Book Review: Magic Breaks (Kate Daniels #7) by Ilona Andrews

From Goodreads:
No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…

As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate’s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe—especially those closest to Kate.

As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear…

This latest installment of the Kate Daniels series does not disappoint in the least. This series just keeps getting better and better! Join me after the jump for a mildly spoilery review of Magic Breaks.

Magic Breaks begins with the Conclave meeting. The Conclave meeting is a meeting between the representatives of the People and the Pack. Kate must attend this Conclave, as the head of the Pack, since Curran is called away. Of course, someone crashes the "party" and all hell breaks loose, but that's part of the fun! The Pack find out that there's been a murder, and a shapeshifter is accused. Kate has to find out exactly what happened and fast. The clock is ticking, and there is every obstacle in her path, including one Hugh d'Ambray. This is exactly the direction that the series needs to go: can Kate hold her own with the multitude of problems that come her way? Can she convince The Pack that she is a strong enough Consort to lead them if something happens to Curran? Some of the Pack members aren't convinced.

Speaking of Hugh d'Ambray, that man is a certified psycho! I want so badly to have a little bit of excitement with a hint of a love triangle, but Hugh is too crazy to love. He is hot though...but that's besides the point...what was I saying? Oh, he's psycho. And he's Crazy In Love with Kate.

Oh, and get this! We've been waiting for Kate to come face to face with her father, the ultra powerful, Roland, and if *finally* happens. It was quite an exciting scene, and I loved how it turned out. I want to tell you so badly how happy I am about something that Kate was wrong about, but I can't! You have to read it for yourself. I had been wondering about this for a long time, and then I see the signs before Kate does. Thankfully, Andrews shows Kate the signs too before the book is over, but we don't get to see her freak out about it. Because you know there was a freak out. LOL

All in all, I loved the book, and I'm still completely invested in the Kate Daniels series. My rating:
