Fangirl Friday: Books into TV Shows

Image
This is a great time for TV. There are so, so many good shows out and so many different platforms producing TV. It's a really beautiful thing for someone like me. I work over forty hours a week, nights and weekends, and I have a three year old. I don't have much time or energy for going out to the movies. But, with so many fantastic shows out right now, I don't have to. There are so many shows I could talk about, but given what kind of blog this is and the plethora of choices, for today's Fangirl Friday, I'm going to focus on TV shows that are based on books. There are/have been some absolutely SPECTACULAR translations just in 2017. They are spoiling us, really. So, sit back, relax, and follow me after the break to discuss some great TV shows of 2017.

“That was when they suspended the Constitution. They said it would be temporary. There wasn't even any rioting in the streets. People stayed home at night, watching television, looking for some direction. There wasn't even an enemy you could put your finger on.”

Review: MaddAddam Trilogy

Image
My last Fangirl Friday post was about the post-apocalyptic, dystopian books I’d been reading, and it ended with a prediction that I’d need a dedicated post to rave about the trilogy I’d just begun. Well, I was right!

Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy, which she prefers to call speculative fiction, presents a deeply disturbing, poignant, and mesmerizing view of a not-too-distant future that is all too easy to believe might happen.

This is a cautionary tale about the dangers of technology run amok. About rampant disregard for the environment and all forms of life. About corporate greed and scientific hubris. But also about profound grace, astonishing beauty, and the very essence of what it means to be human.

The story initially centers around two dissimilar young men who befriend each other while living in a corporate compound where their parents work. They head off to different colleges, then meet up again for an engrossing sequence of life-altering events. They team up with a myste…

Sanity is a valuable possession; I hoard it the way people once hoarded money. I save it, so I will have enough, when the time comes.

The people in the chaos cannot learn. They cannot understand what they are doing to the sea and the sky and the plants and the animals. They cannot understand that they are killing them, and that they will end by killing themselves. And there are so many of them, and each one of them is doing part of the killing, whether they know it or not. And when you tell them to stop, they don’t hear you.

― Margaret Atwood, MaddAddam

Why is it always such a surprise? thinks Toby. The moon. Even though we know it’s coming. Every time we see it, it makes us pause, and hush.

“All it takes,” said Crake, “is the elimination of one generation. One generation of anything. Beetles, trees, microbes, scientists, speakers of French, whatever. Break the link in time between one generation and the next, and it’s game over forever.”

Fangirl Fridays: So, how's that reading challenge going?

Image
Back in January, I decided to start a 2016 Reading Challenge.  There were twelve categories, so all I needed to do was choose one for each. The interesting part was finding books from different genres. I wouldn't be able to select only books published this year (although that won't stop me from getting new releases from my fav authors!).

I've been able to check another three off the list, with the following categories complete.

My 2016 Reading Challenge Is Off To a Great Start!

On New Year's Eve, I was doing what many other people were doing: reflecting on the past year, wondering if there was a resolution I should be making for the new year, and scrolling through my Facebook feed.

Personally, 2015 was a mixed bag. It started off well enough - I finally talked hubby into a Caribbean vacation for the first time since our honeymoon. We had such a great time , I have a feeling it won't be so hard to talk him into it again. For our extended family, things weren't so rosy. Marital problems, financial problems, health problems - there were many sleepless nights. We pitched in to help where we could, and it looks like things are finally turning around.

For the past few years, I've had the same resolution: make more healthy choices. At this point, I don't consider this to be a New Year's resolution, I consider this a way of life. I'll be thrilled if I can drop five pounds, happy if my weight stays the same, bummed if I gain five pounds. It&…

"I hope that people will finally come to realize that there is only one ‘race’ — the human race — and that we are all members of it."

MARGARET  ATWOOD

Margaret Atwood. She rules my favorite authors list. Rather small in stature — with a giant, amazing, super mind and voice — I believe Margaret Atwood doesn’t need a long introduction. So I’ll skip her full biography, you can read it here.
Atwood is Canadian, living in Toronto. She has published novels, short stories, poems, and works of literary criticism. She has written science fiction, speculative fiction, historical fiction, and realistic fiction. She is an essayist and environmental activist.
Atwood became known in 1969 with her first novel, The Edible Woman. Reviewers classified it as a feminist story, which she declined. Her definition of feminism appears to focus on more humanistic concerns: It’s not picking up socks that’s the issue. Who is the ‘we’ that we are talking about [in feminism]? Are we talking about the childre…

I would like to believe this is a story I’m telling.
I need to believe it. I must believe it. Those who can believe that such stories are only stories have a better chance. If it’s a story I’m telling, then I have control over the ending. Then there will be an ending, to the story, and real life will come after it. I can pick up where I left off.
