Not Really A Review: The Siren by Tiffany Riesz

Image
A few years ago I discovered the Dark Romance sub-genre and have been flirting with it ever since. I enjoy the darkness, liking the way the fuckedupness of the characters in these kinds of stories makes me feel well-adjusted and totally sane. I've enjoyed tales of kidnapping, faking one's own death, mafia antics, and motorcycles gangs, and I've read my fair share of BDSM erotica. So when I picked up The Siren, I thought I was prepared for it. I was not.

I'm going to tell you up front that I enjoyed this book, loving the way it grabbed me from the beginning and never let go. The thing is that that grab wasn't for good reasons, though, but because the story and the characters were so utterly fucked up. The female lead is not a good person and I can't really tell which fellow is the male lead, although her ending up with either of them would be terrible. And the side characters are fascinatingly broken but not people I want to be friends with. The things that they …

A SUPER Spoilery Discussion of Feversong by Karen Marie Moningby: Zee the Terrible and Barbara BonesIt's now been two weeks since we got our hot little hands on Feversong, the final book in the Mac & Barrons part of Karen Marie Moning's Fever series. It's almost all we can talk about in the Saucy Wenches hallways (which is really online, but you get the drift) and we have lots of thoughts and opinions so we aren't putting off our Super Spoilery Recap Extravaganza any longer!

Zee told you about how much she loved it in her Wench review, here, and it will surprise exactly no one that Barb did, too. Loved it to pieces. Thought it was pretty much perfect, exactly the kind of conclusion KMM has been promising us since she gave us Iced, leaving everyone precisely where they need to be. That said, we have lots and lots and LOTS of thoughts. So come with us through the jump where we're dishing all the dirt, in filthy, spoilery detail. We mentioned that spoilers would a…

Review:Twice Bitten by Chloe Neill

Image
It's no secret that many of us adore Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires series since we've talked about it early and often as long as we've been a blog. But even those of us who are superfans don't often agree on our favorite characters, let alone our favorite book of the series. And that's okay, because we can appreciate one another's tastes. For the record, my favorite character is Merit (which I told you about when I shared my favorite UF heroines) with Ethan coming in a very close second.

Twelve books in, though, my favorite installment in the series remains the third chapter in Merit's tale, Twice Bitten. While this book is almost six years old now, and nine books and three novellas have come out since then, this one contains my very favorite quotes from the series, my favorite scenes, and the moments that laid the foundation for the Methan we would all come to adore. I talked about the journey Methan took to get to one another, here, and Twice Bitt…

Feverborn : A Very Spoilery Discussion
So, here we are again. Another year, another great book, and another chance for me and Barb to get down and dirty with the Fever world and really sink in hip deep to talk to you guys about it. It will get messy. And crazy. And inappropriate. And you might not hear it, but loud squeeing. I mean, by now you probably know that KMM causes a lot of Wench squealing/screeching/shouting/cackling/sobbing etc. Most importantly, it WILL get spoilery!!!

For those of you unwilling to wade through spoilers from Feverborn right now, stay safe with our NON spoilery Feverborn review here. For a Burned recap check out our review here and our spoilery discussion here

A VERY Spoilery Discussion of Karen Marie Moning's Burned  by: Zee the Terrible and Barbara Bones
You've finished Burned, right? If not, check out Zee's non-spoilery review here, and come back to this post when you're finished. Because we cannot hold in all of the thoughts, speculation and feels we had while reading Burned and in the days since when we couldn't stop thinking about it.

You know we loved Burned, the long awaited seventh installment in Karen Marie Moning's superb Fever series. Which, considering the Wenches' love for KMM and all things Fever, is no surprise. What you may not know is that some of us have been unable to think of much else, that we've been discussing it nonstop. So much of Burned blew us away, from jaw-dropping revelations to stunning plot twists to that last line ensuring that we're dying for book eight!

Come with us through the jump, where we'll discuss all the juicy details. All.the.details.

Review: The Bone Orchard

Image
To fill the void left by no new Sidewinder or Cut & Run books, I decided to read Abigail Roux' newest short story, The Bone Orchard. It is available on it's own or as part of a set, called My Haunted Blender's Gay Love Affair, and Other Twisted Tales. I didn't know the other authors, so I purchased Abi's story on it's own. And, I am so, so glad I did! Now, like I said, it's a short story, so this will be a quick little review. But, read on if you want to find out more about what I thought about Abi's The Bone Orchard.

Review: Shock & Awe (or When the Title Is Perfect)

Image
I am ecstatic to have had the opportunity to review Abi Roux's newest book. I took notes! I made plans for this post! I called characters names! Even things I knew in advance were coming??? They wrecked me. Happily, not as wrecked as the week-long trauma that came from Touch & Geaux, but wrecked all the same.

Shock & Awe started out as familiar. Slightly less familiar to those of us who read and reread the "Who's sailing this ship" piece after Touch & Geaux's release in the spring — it was changed up quite a bit, edited, new bits added in, clarified, and polished until it gleamed.

Follow me through the jump for a spoiler-light glimpse into the lives of Nick O'Flaherty and Kelly Abbott!

A Song of Hate to Love: Jaime Lannister

Image
I have it bad for Jaime Lannister. There isn't any other way to describe it. I fear I might be a little twisted, as he isn't really the kind of man that most women would want as a book boyfriend. However, I would challenge you by saying, well you don't really know him yet. Two seasons of the television series, Game of Thrones is over, but this is just where Jaime's story starts to get interesting, and I reckon, by the end of season 3, many may have changed their tune. Although, I hope you don't, because that will mean less Jaime for me.

I am a dedicated book fan of A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, and it is always a long time between drinks and being able to indulge in my Jaime love. At least the tv series helps to keep him fresh in my mind. I loathed Jaime with a passion until Book 3 of the series, A Storm of Swords. Then, that wickedly clever Martin changed my viewpoint and, miraculously, loathing turned to love. Is it possible to do an about face whe…

House Rules by Chloe Neill: A VERY Spoilery Review

by Zee the Terrible and Barbara Bones
We are not shy about our love for Chloe Neill’s Chicagoland Vampires series. We have gushed about how much we love the characters, how perfect the story has been so far, how much we can’t wait to discover the answers to questions that have been building over several books. We loved Biting Cold, and told you all about it here. While House Rules did not have an epic return to bask in, we were still incredibly excited for it because, well, because it’s a Chicagoland Vampires book! So we’re going to tell you all about it, in detail, and what we thought of it.
But first, we want to take a moment to talk about the creator, Chloe Neill. Specifically how amazing a writer she is. Chloe Neill is a reader’s writer. She truly understands what readers enjoy, what makes for a satisfying story, and she delivers. Every single time. Were we devastated by Hard Bitten? Of course we were. But she reassured us that it wo…

Quote of the Day

Image
“Jaime," Brienne whispered, so faintly he thought he was dreaming it. "Jaime, what are you doing?"

"Dying," he whispered back.

"No," she said, "no, you must live."

He wanted to laugh. "Stop telling me what to do, wench. I'll die if it pleases me."

"Are you so craven?"

The words shocked him. He was Jaime Lannister, a knight of the Kingsguard, he was the Kingslayer. No man had ever called him craven. Other things they called him, yes; oathbreaker, liar, murderer. They said he was cruel, treacherous, reckless. But never craven. "What else can I do, but die?"

"Live," she said, "live, and fight, and take revenge."

Craven, Jaime thought.... Can it be?  ........ Was that all I was, a sword hand? Gods be good, is it true? The wench had the right of it. He could not die.”

Beyond Here Lies Nothing

Image
When Chloe Neill Ripped My Heart Out Of My Chest and Crushed It With Her Bare Hands (& then made it all better.)I love authors. I love the words they write, the characters they create for us to love and hate. The power of the feelings they convey through those words and characters. And the way they transport me to a world so different from my own, I can't help but be mesmerized by it. One thing I don't love so much (but... like a true masochist, I love to hate) is their power over me. With just a few words, they can turn my life upside down, rip apart the threads that kept my sanity together, tear down the walls I built around my vulnerable heart over and over again, and basically crush me like a flower rusted from the rain. (Hey, I'm not being THAT dramatic; it's a song!)

MAJOR SPOILERS: There are spoilers for Hard Bitten, Drink Deep, and Biting Cold ahead. Please don't keep reading if you don't want to spoil the very amazing Chicagoland Vampires series f…

Setting the Fevered Stage III

Fever mythology in Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander series

We're down to the last couple of books, so I think we're finally ready to finish our exploration of how Karen Marie Moning slowly created the mythology for her tremendously popular Fever books in her earlier Highlander series. If you missed the first two parts of this discussion, you can find them here and here.

Isn’t it amazing that many of us Fever fans started reading Darkfever with absolutely none of this background? And yet managed to follow along just fine, become hopelessly addicted, and need an intervention to pry ourselves away from Dublin? (Oops, was that TMI?) Fever became all the more interesting to me when I realized how deeply the mythology ran, and how much mythology pre-dated Fever in the Highlander series.

Click through to resume our discussion with book 6, The Immortal Highlander. And remember that there are lots of spoilers about both the Highlander and Fever books. If you’re new to this set of posts,…

Setting the Fevered Stage II

Image
Fever mythology in Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander series

Last week, I wrote a post introducing Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander series and her inspiration for transitioning her evolving mythology and story lines to the new Urban Fantasy genre, where they became the Fever series. If you have not yet read the Highlander series, you might want to start with that post.

Today, I’d like to track down where the elements of the Fever mythology first appeared in each Highlander book. I found it fascinating to watch the mythology take shape as I read, and most particularly enjoyed rereading the two series back-to-back, so that I could fully focus on the evolution of the Fever world without interruption.

Beware if you haven’t read all the Highlander books! This post will be very spoilery, because it is hard to explain where Fever mythology appears without mentioning crucial plot points. There are also a couple of big Fever spoilers in here. I will try to avoid spoiling each book’s romantic HE…

My Dream Cast: The Fever Series

Image
“I love books, by the way, way more than movies. Movies tell you what to think. A good book lets you choose a few thoughts for yourself. Movies show you the pink house. A good book tells you there's a pink house and lets you paint some of the finishing touches, maybe choose the roof style, park your own car out front. My imagination has always topped anything a movie could come up with. Case in point, those darned Harry Potter movies. That was so not what that part-Veela-chick, Fleur Delacour, looked like.”
― Karen Marie Moning, Darkfever

In August of 2011, our dreams came true.  DreamWorks announced that they had purchased the rights to Karen Marie Moning's five book Fever series.  Since then, speculation has been rampant about who will play Ms. Moning's characters.  As far as I'm aware, the production of these movies hasn't really moved forward since the purchase of the rights.  Therefore, in place of actual casting news, I'm here to offer up my vision of thes…

Our Favorite Chicagoland Vampires Quotesby Barbara Bones and Zee the TerribleWe're still in a tizzy after our long awaited Biting Cold release day, and just not quite ready to let Merit, Ethan, and Chicago go until House Rules in February. We know that Chloe Neill has had us in a thrall since the first few pages of Some Girls Bite. So we thought, what better way to celebrate our Chicagoland Vampires love than to revisit some of our most memorable scenes, with quotes that gave us chills and brought tears to our eyes, or just made us smile or sigh. Here are just some of our favorites from the series. (Not all of them of course, we'd need a lot more than one post to cover them all.)Keep reading to see if our favorites are also yours.

The Almost Proposal: In Which Abi Roux Trolls Her Minions

The Cut & Run minions were anxiously awaiting August 11, 2012.  The  moment Stars & Stripes released, so many of us descended upon Riptide Publishing's website to download the eagerly awaited 6th book in the Cut & Run series that the site crashed about 10 minutes after the book was released.
The fandom went radio silent while we read.
The minions who read quickly were quiet, waiting for the others to catch up (we are a respectful lot).
But it didn't take long for one particular scene in Stars & Stripes to start getting attention.  And questions.  And angst-filled pulling of hair and gnashing of teeth.
Warning: Spoilers after the jump.

Biting Cold by Chloe Neill: A Very Spoilery Review With major spoilers about Hard Bitten, Drink Deep, AND Biting Cold

Review by Zee the Terrible and Barbara Bones

We've been waiting a long time for this one. It seems like forever! This was either going to be IT, or a disappointment. Why you ask? Because Ethan is back, baby! And this time, well, this time he means business. Merit and Ethan's journey has been progressing at some rate or another from the very first book. Even though sometimes it seemed like they were taking one step forward and two steps back, I had faith. I wholeheartedly agreed with Ethan when he told Merit that she was...:“Procrastinating,” he said. “Avoiding the inevitability of you and me.”
So I waited. Patiently. I knew the heartache would be worth it. But then came the STAKING. And seriously... the world (CLV world) came crashing down around me. I made it through, with a lot of therapy. I didn't want to continue but I did. And then came Drink Deep. I won&…
