Review: Into the Fire

Image
Into the Fire, the last of the Night Prince books by Jeaniene Frost, was released on February 28th of this year. This book has been a long time coming and I'm really glad it's finally here. I have always loved Vlad and I really enjoy Leila and all of the other new characters introduced in this series. But, I think that it is definitely time for this series to come to an end. This book has been out for awhile, so I'm not going to hold back on the spoilers. So, be warned, spoilers abound! Keep reading after the jump to read my thoughts on Vlad's last book.

"Yes, priorities,” Vlad agreed in a light tone. Then to Ian, he said, “Touch me again, and I’ll feed your limbs to a pack of wolves.”
Ian shook his head. “Can’t even pretend to be marginally sane, can you?"

Fangirl Friday: Vlad Dracul

Image
Vladislav Basarab Dracul (From Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress and Night Prince novels.) Vlad Tepesh, Vlad the Impaler, Prince, no matter what name you know him by, you know two things to be true.
He is an arrogant, charming, loyal, deadly man. Don't EVER call him Dracula. For those of you who don't know who I'm talking about, do yourselves a favor and pick up Jeaneine Frost's Night Prince series, and the Night Huntress series while you're at it. That is where we meet Vlad Dracul, vampire, pyrokinetic, and subject of this week's Fangirl Friday!

First things first, let me just say that sometimes, Vlad is a controlling, utterly irritating, great big bag of dicks. He is so infuriating sometimes I want to shake him. But, the logical part of my brain knows why he does what he does. So, I just shake my head and wait for him reveal why he acted like he did. He always makes me love him again. And, after reading Bound by Flames, I love him more than ever.  Why do I …

Bound... and Determined! (A review of Bound by Flames by Jeaniene Frost)

(Wench Care) Welcome aboard, Saucy Readers! It's been an exciting couple weeks for new releases! Wench Anne and I were the only two (as I recall) who weren't in the process of devouring Burned as soon as it came out, but really that seems to only have been because we were saving up all our loves for the release of the newest Vlad book from Jeanine Frost: that's right, Night Prince #3, Bound by Flames released on January 27! Now, personally, I'd been so caught up in reading The Belgariad and The Malloreon that I'd completely lost track of the date. So the evening of the 26th found me frantically racing through the first two books trying to get ready for the third. Unsurprisingly, but also wonderfully, it was totally worth the effort!

(Wench Anne) I was waiting with bated breath for bound by flames. Initially, I just reread Twice Tempted. But, after reading that, I had to go back to Once Burned. I just couldn't get enough of Leila and Vlad. And, now, while I want …

My Dream Cast: The Night Huntress Series

Image
"Get stuffed, don't you have more publicity stunts to pull?" Bones shot back. "How about chatting with another writer who can smear your name into greater popularity?""What, did Anne Rice not return your calls, mate?" Vlad asked scathingly. "Jealousy is such an ugly trait."At Grave's End by Jeaniene Frost
As regular readers know, Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series is one of our very top favorite series' around here. So, imagine our heartbreak when we learned that Up from the Grave was to be the last in the series. Upon hearing that, I promptly started a series re-read. My re-read reminded me of how much I adore that world and especially Cat and Bones. They are one of my favorite couples of all time. So, in preparation for the final release, I decided to finally put my thoughts on who I think should play these characters into words. I've come to love doing these pieces. It would be a dream come true to have a movie…

Of the Heroes and Villains

Image
My Top Ten Anti-HeroesIn the nearly three years that my reading list has been filled to overflowing with urban fantasy titles, I have learned several things about myself and my worldview that I didn't realize or think about before. Like my deep love of kick-ass heroines, my joy in reading profanity sprinkled in books, and how much I adore sharing a reading experience with friends. But nothing has been so crystal clear as realizing how much I love a great anti-hero.

Humans are flawed creatures, each of us containing good and bad all packaged within the same unstable wrapping, and that's what I like to see in my heroes. I don't want heroes who always know what the right thing to do is, and always do exactly that. I don't want to read about characters who have no struggle with inner demons, who always follow social norms exactly, who are always virtuous, idolize their mothers unconditionally and have equal room in their hearts for both cats and dogs. Those characters alway…

Two Leilas seemed to be battling it out inside of me. The first was outraged that he still considered it a fait accompli that I'd give in to him, and the second....that slutty bitch was wondering what Vlad looked like naked.

"I don't want to touch you, either." The words hit me like a slap, but before I could respond, he went on. "No one feels like you do, so every brush of your skin is a cruel reminder of what I've lost. I can barely stand the sight of you because you're more beautiful than I've allowed myself to remember, and when I cut that wire off Maximus and smelled you all over him, I wanted to kill him more than I've wanted to kill anyone in my life, yet I couldn't because of my promise to you." His voice thickened. "Now sit down and take my hand Leila. The pilots are waiting for my command to leave." Slow tears continued to trickle down my cheeks, but for a different reason this time. "You care."

"I knew I wasn't making sense, yet my mind was whirling with joy, shock, and disbelief. At the same time, the rational part of me snapped, get a grip, Leila! One more sputter and I'd magically transform into a nineteenth century Southern belle, fanning myself while gasping, "This is all so sudden!"

"This place stinks."

"Did the guards forget to spray Febreeze?" Vlad asked in mock indignation. Then he gave me a jaded look. "It's a dungeon, Leila. They're supposed to smell."

Quote of the Day

"I despise flowery speech since those who use it are usually guilty of the worst betrayals later. That and the type of life I've lived have made me incapable of saying the pretty words you deserve to hear, yet if I made you a vampire, you'd feel my emotions as clearly as I hear your thoughts now."

Then he drew my hand to his chest, placing it over his heart.

"I never turned any of my previous lovers because I didn't want them to feel how little I cared. You I loved, yet you left me because I wouldn't verbalize my emotions. That will probably happen again, but if you could feel what you mean to me, Leila" — his voice deepened — "words wouldn't matter."

Twice Tempted by Jeaniene Frost: A Review by Beta and Zee

So we FINALLY got our greedy little hands on Vlad’s next book. FINALLY. We aren’t patient Wenches, apparently! (NEWSFLASH!)

Just to clarify, Twice Tempted by Jeaniene Frost is the second book in the Night Prince series. After having read and loved the first one, Once Burned, we couldn’t wait for the next installment on the much anticipated release day!

What can we say, Ms. Frost wrote, delivered, and conquered... as always. Just when you thought you’d read it all and then some about the infamous Vlad the Impaler, she manages to give him a fresh perspective, a “new” life, as it were, that captivates you from the first page without seeming repetitive or tedious.

Now, we don’t want to give away too much. If you’re reading this review, we’re assuming you’ve read Once Burned, which we have also reviewed, in case you want to get up to speed on the events in this series. And we’re trying to restrict ourselves to giving away only the det…

"Hi. Cat was just keeping me company until you came back."
He glanced in the direction she’d disappeared to before returning his attention to me.
"Fourteen hundred and thirty-one."
I blinked. "What’s that?"
"The year I was born, which is not, as you’ll note, yesterday."
I stifled a groan. Busted already.~ Jeaniene Frost, Twice Tempted

Nerd Girl Mini-Road Trip

Release-Day Appearance with Jeaniene Frost
Guest Wench Jennifer and I had a girl's night out this week, when we drove a couple of hours to meet Jeaniene Frost, author of the Wench favorite Night Huntress and Night Prince series, at the appearance celebrating the release of Twice Tempted. We made this same trip back in August for the release of Once Burned, and I'm sure that we will continue to make the trip whenever Ms. Frost does release day signings at Malaprops Bookstore in Asheville, North Carolina. She is that wonderful. Jennifer and I are both firmly entrenched in other series right now, and Vlad demands one's full attention, so we'll be getting to him later, but look for a thorough review of Twice Tempted by Wenches who are completely enamored by Vlad and the book, next week.

Now, click through to read all about what Jeanine Frost had to say, about world building, character names, and some of her intriguing characters that we can't get enough of.

March Book Releases

March is a busy month for the Wenches. There are books being released in three much-beloved series. And, in a horrible variation of Sophie's Choice, two of these highly anticipated books are being released on THE SAME DAY!

Speaking of which, Wench Veronica has some strategies for getting through all of these releases, if you are feeling a little overwhelmed.

But, I'm here today to give you a little recap of the previous book in each series and discuss what some of the other Wenches and I are looking forward to with the newest additions. Which books are these, you ask? First is Frost Burned, by Patricia Briggs, releasing on March 7th. This is the seventh book in the lovely Mercy Thompson series. Then, on March 26th, comes our cruel twist of fate: The second in the Night Prince trilogy by Jeaniene Frost, Twice Tempted, and the long-awaited addition to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, Lover at Last, by J. R. Ward are released.
After the jump, there's a s…
