Review : An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole

Image
Two things made me pick up this book: so many authors I love were raving about it on twitter, and that cover. *heart eyes* I fell in love with that cover before I even opened the book.

I am so very glad I did trust the recommendations and buy it immediately, and I am now going to tell you, Saucy Readers, why you should be reading this beautiful book by this amazing author and recommend it to everyone you know. Trust me!

Wench rant about Alex Craft Series (#1-4) by Kalayna Prince

Image
There are 4 books in the series so far; Grave Witch, Grave Dance, Grave Memory and Grave Visions. Book 5 is coming out in July, Grave Ransom.
Alex can speak to ghosts and tries to help them out with their unfinished business or if they died as a result of a criminal activity. She often works with the cops.
So far these books have been good. I just can't put my finger on what's bothering me.
Follow me after the jump and pick my thoughts (beware of slight spoilers).

Sometimes I have a Reading Disconnect

Image
Connection. It’s one of the reasons I love reading. I need that thread that pulls me into a story. I have to have that one character who it’s essential that they make it out alive once the series is done and dust. Or I really need these two characters to fall in love. Or sometimes, especially in dark fantasy books, I might, just need that character to be eliminated. Painfully or excruciatingly. What is it with me and needing authors to not be afraid to kill characters off? Maybe it says something about my reading tastes. So let's look at a few books that I disconnected from and some of the reasons why certain books haven't quite worked for me.

Sorry in advance as I know some of the Wenches have enjoyed a few of the books and series below.

Review: Fat Girl Walking: Sex, Food, Love, and Being Comfortable in Your Skin...Every Inch of It

Image
If you read our weekly What the Wenches Are Reading posts, you'll know that a little while ago, Barb and I both read Fat Girl Walking: Sex, Food, Love, and Being Comfortable in Your Skin...Every Inch of It by Brittany Gibbons. Well, Barb read it first and then, knowing me like she does, insisted that I read it as well. And, I am so glad she did. I'm here to tell you my thoughts on this lovely book. And, in the process, hopefully convince you to read it as well. But, first, a summary of Fat Girl Walking....sort of:
Dear person holding Fat Girl Walking
First of all, thanks for picking up this copy of my first book. I hope you buy it—and not just because each purchase gets me one step closer to buying the leather pants of my dreams.
I hope you buy Fat Girl Walking because I want to start a conversation. Or continue a conversation, one I inadvertently started a while ago when I took my clothes off on a stage in front of 700 people. A lot of people thought I was awesome for doing that…

You Can't Undo What You Know

Winds of Winter by George R.R. Martin.

Well it looks like Winds of Winter isn't going to be out in 2015 with Martin's publisher saying at least 2016 as per the UK paper The Independent  . I'm all for a writer writing whatever they want. I don't really care how long it takes as long as it's a great book. I have very few book series I read as soon as they hit the shelves. This is one of them. I regularly check GRRM's This is not a Blog in my fervent wish that a release date is announced there. Plus I know GRRM isn't going to spoil the readers. Of course for the 1000's of times I've checked there and the multiple of other projects GRRM is involved in, it became clear that Book #6 wasn't going to be out anytime soon.

George R.R. Martin is a Sadist...and We Love It!

Image
What do we know of George R.R. Martin? He writes brilliant, epic, fantasy novels. He takes *forevah* to write a new release in the series. (A Song of Ice and Fire series has been around since the publication of A Game of Thrones, in 1996!) Oh, and he will kill off the characters we love, as well as the characters we love to hate. No one is safe in his world! Yet, still, like the idealistic, hopeful fools we are, we believe that he can't shock us *again*! Oh, yes, he can.

If this intrigues you, I urge you to read this series. It is not a super easy and quick read, especially with the average book being approximately 1,000+ pages. I promise you though, it is SO worth it.

A Song of Ice and Fire series order of books:
A Game of Thrones (1996)
A Clash of Kings (1998)
A Storm of Swords (2000)
A Feast for Crows (2005)
A Dance with Dragons (2011)

HALT! Go no further unless you have read ALL the books in the series or have been spoiled through book #5, A Dance with Dragons.

My Literary Pet Peeves

Image
As with all avid readers there are more things that I love about books than I can even count, but there are also things that make me want to rip my own skin off when I read them. These are things that can ruin a perfectly good story for me, things that make me not only want to not finish the book I'm reading, but also make me want to avoid anything else that author has written.

I'm going to be doing some bitching in this post, so if you don't want to read about my literary complaints and irritations, you may not want to click through. Otherwise, come along, dear reader.

We Are Never, Ever Getting Back Together

Image
I was going to try to write something funny, but I failed. It’s one year since that fateful day when The Book That Shall Not Be Named was released worldwide (you can check out our initial reactions here). All we had asked for was an ending that would remain true to the characters we had come to love over a long, long period of time.

Spoilers had already leaked about how the series would end. Spoilers some of us were grateful to have known. Spoilers some of us didn’t believe could be true. I was one of the latter. Believing that there was no way the rumours could be true. The first set of spoilers had us going :

And by the time people we trusted had read the books :

Our (mostly awesome) fandom was large, yes mainly Eric and Sookie lovers. However that wasn’t solely why we read the books. We knew Eric was a vampire and Sookie a human. We knew Sookie had no desire to be turned. Yet we trusted that the author could find a way to leave both characters with a satisfactory ending. A ending that…

I Don't Want to Say Goodbye, But I Have To

Image
When should an author end a series? You know the drill. 200 books down the line and you're thinking "enough already!!!" Perhaps you have doggedly followed the author. Loved the first 4 or 5 books and just want a satisfactory ending for your favourite characters. You've stuck with the author through thick and thin. Stalked them on Tumblr and Twitter. Joined the Goodreads and Facebook groups as you dissect every single action that was ever undertaken through the novels. Whether Eleanora has porridge for breakfast or it you really can survive on a diet of coffee and takeaways. I'm still trying to work out how coffee can keep the motor running with all the leaping and jumping the heroine / hero has to undertake in a day. I need to remember to include a bucket-load of sugar into my caffeine hit. But it is possible in a novel.

But after a while a series gets to that point where fresh ideas are starting to wane, the action starts to feel a bit repetitive and before you …

See Ya Later 2013 and Hello 2014

Image
Or don't let the door smack you on the way out.
The year is quickly drawing to a close and as with most things we love looking at what has  happened in the previous twelve months and what to look forward to in 2014. It's been a year of book highs and book lows for the Wenches. One book series that united us ended in a sea of pus. Yet we discovered new series and expanded on the love we already had for other series we were reading. Let's take a look at what we are relieved to say goodbye to and what we can't wait for next year.

Check after the jump.

Secret McQueen Series: Review

Image
Sierra Dean's Secret McQueen series: ReviewI first got curious about this series after the VBC Alpha Challenge. I was championing Ethan Sullivan on behalf of the Wenches, and he was up against Secret McQueen in the first round (Ethan won!). So I put these on my list. I was curious about the girl with the unreal name who made it to the Alpha Challenge.

Click through to see what I thought of the series!

This review will contain spoilers.

Lather, Rinse, Repeat!

Image
Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance TropesI will apologize in advance readers. For this is yet another Wench rant. I can't seem to get through a lot of books without ranting lately. *sigh*
Last time, it was a rant on all the horrible, out-dated cliches in erotica. This time, I want to talk about some of the tropes in UF/PNR that I have come across too many times to count (and sometimes in other genres too). I really do love most things about the genre, honestly I do. But sometimes, I start a new series and think "oh.. this again.... BORING!" or worse. There have been times when I have just put the book away refusing to put myself through the same old story again.

I love the endless possibilities presented in the UF/PNR genre. There are no rules. The writers can pretty much shock, surprise and delight us in millions of imaginative ways. Despite that, it is honestly baffling why there are so many tropes used ad nauseum. Some of our readers will be very familiar with these, read…

Jane Austen. I Ain't Mad Atcha.

Image
By all accounts, I feel that I should adore Jane Austen. I mean, everybody does, right? She's always been well loved, but her popularity has exploded in recent years. Big budget movies, BBC adaptations, spin-off books. Even people who don't read have read her books and love her. I am quite fond of her contemporaries (Shelley, Brontë, etc.). And having a lit degree from a small midwestern college means I have some appreciation for British literature (my program was all about the dead white guys). Austen was considered somewhat of a rule-breaker in her time; novels weren't entirely accepted as an art form, and she supported (tried to) her family by writing rather than marrying well. I like rule-breakers.

I have tried, over the years, to like Jane Austen's work. I've tried really hard. I'm not sure why, but I kept telling myself, "You should like these books, why don't you like these books? Try reading just one more, maybe you'll like this one." …

Is the Love Affair Over?

Image
Why M/M is Losing My Interest As some of you might have noticed, I enjoy reading M/M books. That's right, Male/Male action. I found this genre after getting sucked into the world of Qhuay (Qhuinn and Blay), which transpired over several installments in the J.R. Ward Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Many of my friends enjoy this genre as well, but I've started to feel like the love affair is over. The heady days of reading nothing but M/M have passed me by, and I'm feeling a bit disillusioned with the genre.

You might ask why I feel this way, after all I've been through together with Ty and Zane and so many other exciting male couples. I'll explain my reasons for this sad turn of events after the jump.

What Hurts the Most

Image
DEA Spoiler-GateI want to talk a bit about the events between April 25th and the official U.S. release of Dead Ever After on May 7th. I'm speaking specifically of the DEA spoilers, our reactions to those spoilers, and the responses, both official and by other SVM fans.

You see, I'm angry. Sure, I've had strong feelings about the book itself, but I'm more angry at how some of the SVM fans have been treated. I'm angry at how the fans—who have been loyal to the series from the start, who love all of the characters, and who have defended Charlaine Harris from unfair criticism over the years—I am angry at how WE were treated when we had a valid and fair emotional reaction to the spoilers.

Let me be clear. We were not upset because Sam was the HEA. We were not upset because Eric was not the HEA. If you need proof, read my DEA Hopes and Dreams post, the entirety written pre-spoiler. While we had differing opinions and desires, every one of us hoped for Sookie a place wher…

Dead Ever After: Hopes and Dreams

Image
It's not a huge secret that most of the Wenches are wishing for a DEA HEA that involves Eric. But I caught up with my fellow Wenches and some SVM friends, and asked them about their other hopes and dreams for Dead Ever After, as well as any burning questions from over the years they hope finally get answered. We've been discussing these things for a long time, and we're less than 24 hours from our speculation and questions being put to rest. After 12 books, it's an odd feeling indeed. Bittersweet, if you will. Anyway, keep reading after the jump to find out what we're hoping Dead Ever After has in store for us Sookie.

Why I Don't Hate Layla

Image
What'll You Do When You Get Lonely and Nobody's Waiting By Your Side?
The Chosen Layla is not a very popular character right now, at least not in my corner of the Black Dagger Brotherhood (BDB) fandom. To put it bluntly, she's the witch-with-a-capital-B who manipulated Qhuinn into fathering her child and is keeping him and his true love Blay apart.

I'm not happy with how it all went down, and Layla isn't on my Top 5 or Top 10 or even Top 15 list of favorite females in the series. But I don't blame her (too much) for her actions as she went into her needing. And I certainly don't think she's solely responsible for the "situation" as we go into Lover at Last (hello, Qhuinn, I'm looking at you, too).

To review, in Lover Reborn, John, Qhuinn, and Layla returned to the BDB compound while Autumn was in her needing. Layla thought she was immune because of the time she spent on the Other Side but she was wrong. Soon after her return, her needing ca…

Why I Hate Layla

Image
I’ve been a big fan of the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series by J. R. Ward for about two years. Although I love all of the Brothers, their shellans, and soldiers, Qhuinn and Blaylock have a special place in my heart. Qhuinn and Blay were the reason I discovered the m/m genre. I started shipping them in Lover Enshrined. It was in this book that Blay confessed his love for his best friend, Qhuinn. Qhuinn said he didn't feel the same way, but his actions told us different.
They pulled apart, looked into each other's eyes...and something shifted..."Just once," Blay said softly. "Do it just once. So I'll know what it's like."...Oh, it was sweet. Blay's lips were incredibly sweet and soft. The tongue probably wasn't supposed to be part of it, but there was no helping that.Fast forward to Lover Mine, and we found out that Qhuinn has feelings for Blay, too. Unfortunately, Qhuinn isn't ready to deal with his feelings, and Blay moves on and starts da…

When It Isn't Like It Should Be

Image
When Did Erotica Become Unsexy?Saucy Readers, this is a rant. If you’re having a good day and don’t want to ruin your mood, maybe you should stop here. If you enjoy the recent trends in romances and erotica — regardless of the barely-there plot — you might not want to read this either. You’ve been warned!

I’m one of those women who enjoys reading romances every once in a while. After every intense series, chilling mystery, and hair-raising horror story, I like taking a break with a romance. For the past few years, I’ve found that erotica is a fun break in between book series, even when the series themselves are full of romance and sex. It just helps knowing that at the end of around 2-3 hundred pages there will be a happily ever after.

I won’t lie — the sexual tension, chemistry, and the sex in these books is a major reason I enjoy them. I like the whole “girl meets boy, boy tries to get girl, girl holds off, sparks fly, they clash, they melt, they surrender” formula. Yes, it’s predic…
