If Cadogan was Gryffindor, all bravery and guts, Dumas was Ravenclaw, all intellect and cleverness. I liked being clever, and I liked clever people, so we were a good fit.

"I made up my mind because we fit," he said, reaching out  to take my hand, to squeeze it. "You make me better, and I like to think I do the same for you."

I thought of the awkward human, then vampire, I'd been, and the slightly less awkward vampire I was becoming. "It's just--you were very unexpected."

"That's because you'd only explored one half of yourself, Sentinel. I merely gave you the chance to blossom. To be the person you were always meant to become."

Tears rushed into my eyes, and I knuckled them away. "Damn it, Ethan. How do you come up with things like that?"

"I keep a notebook."

"I had a roommate for a few months. It didn't take."

"What was wrong with her?"

"She was...chipper. I don't mind laughing, appreciate quality sarcasm. But she thought the world was a happy and wonderful place."

"And you know better?"

"Parts of the world are great; but parts of the world are garbage. I can't abide optimism."

I pointed down. "Those are Snoopy sheets."

"Snoopy was a realist. Much respect for Snoopy.  Woodstock was the asshole."

I had no response to that.

Lulu gave him a two-fingered whistle. “The ensemble is fantastic.”

He flipped her off.

“I mean, he is just delectable,” Lulu said quietly.

“He’s not bad,” was all I was willing to give him. I was still too disturbed by the fact that I found him attractive.

“You could bounce a quarter off his ass.”

“I can hear you, Lulu,” he called back, pulling on jeans and a T-shirt. He glanced back, and there was no hiding the masculine pride in his eyes. “Wolf hearing, remember?”

“I love you and I love your mother with all my heart. I love this House, as well. It is neither my child nor my wife, but it is...” He seemed to struggle with the word.

“It’s yours,” I said simply, and offered him a smile. “And that’s all there is to it.”

I’d never stood in the sun, never felt the sunshine on my bare skin. But the scent of him made me think of those things.

“You are your mother’s daughter,” my father said, with not a little pride in it.

“As if the thirty-eight hours of labor didn’t prove it,” my mother said with a smile.

“I recall them well,” my father said flatly. “You were ... very angry.”

“Was it the cursing that tipped you off?”

“And the throwing of many objects,” he said, counting them off on his hands. “And challenging an Apex shifter to a knife fight. And accusing your sister of being a Russian spy. And promising to stake the doctor if you didn’t get drugs.”

“Nonsense. I was a paragon of patience and gentility.”

Liam looked at Moses. "You get anything from that file?"

"Oh, are we remembering I'm in the room now?" His voice was the perfect mix of egotistical and long-suffering. That was pretty much Moses to a T.

I snorted. "That sounds like a personal problem."
Gavin grinned. "Personal, but never a problem..."

He'd wanted to reach out, I realized. Wanted to touch me, but was working to hold himself back. We were holding ourselves back from each other, still looking for that place of comfort and trust. But I didn't think we'd find it tonight. Not out here in the darkness.

"And that's exactly what a hardheaded person would say."
I didn't have an argument for that.
