Life goes on, and in the going, reveals itself. Quit being so impatient.

“You learned appreciation when people proved your worth by spending time with you instead of money on you.”

I sucked in a deep breath and moved faster, following the enchanted thread, tugging it, my desire for what we'd find on the other end becoming intemperate. I could only imagine why Callis would be enthralled with this city — how he thought he was going to make it his own, build a castle where the supernatural dripped with the rain and bebopped alongside the pentatonic scales. A spiritual nexus that drew the willing and beguiled the mundane. It was no wonder descendants of so many of the Great European witching families had ended up here. New Orleans was a place you wanted to be born from and die in. Even I, who'd been drained of magic for centuries, could feel her alluring whisper begging me to stay.

Quote of the Day

Image
“Ruth,” a thin, raspy voice calls from another room in the house, “who’s at the door?”
Did he miss the part where we broke into their home?
Ruth’s gaze stays on Pestilence for a long time, moving from his bow and quiver to his crown, before settling on his face.
“I believe it’s one of the Four Horsemen, dear.” Her eyes flick to me. “And he’s brought with him a lady friend.”
Laura Thalassa, Pestilence

When Jada tossed her the spear, Barrons watched it fly end over end through the air, measured Jada a long moment and nodded.

"So it's ours again," Enyo said, catching and sheathing it in her waistband in a fluid movement. "Does that mean we've lost Mac?"

"No," Barrons said, dangerously soft. "I've lost many things. Mac will never be one of them."

If Cadogan was Gryffindor, all bravery and guts, Dumas was Ravenclaw, all intellect and cleverness. I liked being clever, and I liked clever people, so we were a good fit.

Quote of the Day

"I had a roommate for a few months. It didn't take."

"What was wrong with her?"

"She was...chipper. I don't mind laughing, appreciate quality sarcasm. But she thought the world was a happy and wonderful place."

"And you know better?"

"Parts of the world are great; but parts of the world are garbage. I can't abide optimism."

I pointed down. "Those are Snoopy sheets."

"Snoopy was a realist. Much respect for Snoopy.  Woodstock was the asshole."

I had no response to that.

There was probably some sort of deep conclusions to be derived from the fact that losing my phone disturbed me more than losing my underwear.

This wasn’t me. I always had my phone and my gun. And underwear.

“Just keep in mind,” Leon said, merging onto the highway, “I’m your cousin and you love me. If you attack me while I’m driving, we will both die and then he wins. Don’t let him win, Catalina.”

ARC Review: Shades of Wicked by Jeaniene Frost

Image
In this thrilling new Night Rebel series set in New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress world, sexy and ruthless vampire Ian finally meets his match!
The Rule Breaker
Master vampire Ian is unrepentant, shameless…and every shade of wicked. He’s made one too many enemies in his two centuries of existence, including Dagon, a demon who now lays claim to his soul. Ian’s only chance to escape Dagon is to join forces with a Law Guardian, but he’s never been able to abide by the rules for long.
The Law Maker
Veritas’ normal role is police, judge and jury to reprobates like Ian. But she has her own ax to grind with Dagon, so if she can use Ian as bait…well, all’s fair in law and war. As they scour supernatural hotspots to perfect their trap, Veritas soon realizes Ian’s devil-may-care, roguish image hides something much more powerful. And Ian discovers that Veritas has shocking secrets of her own. As they’re drawn to each other with a passion as intense as their peril, eit…

If we didn't hold on to the spirit of the city, it would be like all of those people lost in the Storm had died in vain...if we didn't shake the caskets and dance to the beats on the mispronounced French streets.

Mother Nature has taken our homes, our schools, our electricity, and even our people, but there's no way New Orleans would let her take our traditions.

The air is different in New Orleans.

It holds the scents of fry and the peppery blends the locals drown their seafood in, and the buzzing of cicadas, and the stomps of jazz pianists. It smothers your senses with a slight hint of intoxication, making you want more. Maybe that's why vampires have always loved it here.

Review: Magic Triumphs by Ilona Andrews

Image
I've just finished devouring Magic Triumphs, the final installment in one of my favourite series. I've been anticipating this book for a long time!

After the jump, I'll explain a bit about why the Kate Daniels series is so special to me and what I think about the way Kate's story ends.

Quote of the Day

Image
"Miss Le Moyne, if you remember only one thing I have ever taught you, let it be this: you can never please everyone. As an artist, if your work doesn't inflame at least part of the audience, then you might as well call it quits and sell insurance. And that goes for you too, Mr. Scientist. The world needs more boundary pushers, not more boundary creators."

Quote of the Day

Image
Sometimes magic finds us; we don't find it. And once it does, it's nearly impossible to close ourselves to it. It would be like trying to forget how to read or speak or walk. Usually people who unlock magic within themselves don't understand their importance in the world.

Quote of the Day

Image
“You’re mine,” he said, his voice rough. “I’m not letting you go.”

“I’m glad we cleared that up.”

“Do you understand me, Nevada? I’m not walking away. I thought I could, but I can’t and I don’t want to.”

I brushed his cheek with my fingertips. “What makes you think I would let you go?”

~ Ilona Andrews, Wildfire (Hidden Legacy #3)

Quote of the Day

“What about you, Rogan? Are you afraid of sleeping with an abomination?”

“When we were at the lodge, and you were dancing in the snow, I kept wondering why it wasn’t melting. You’re like spring, Nevada. My spring.”

Love is funny. Even though you don't have that person anymore, you still have the feeling. You don't lose your love. You lost the tangible, tactile, sense-sational ability to experience the person or animal you lost.
Grief is all about not being able to touch anymore. Not being able to use your senses to experience them on a physical level. They've moved beyond an impenetrable veil, beyond your hands and mouth and eyes. High Voltage by Karen Marie Moning.
