Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Scenes That Make Us Sigh

Ah, the day to celebrate love. I figured, what better way to celebrate love than to share some of our favorite, swoon-worthy quotes from some of our favorite books. From the classics, to UF/PNR, these books have always had the power to make us sigh and our hearts melt a little. (And make us a little green with envy.)

So, without further adieu, a look at some of our favorite romantic quotes!

1) Cat & Bones, from Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series, belong on pretty much any list that has anything to do with love and romance. Bones melts both our knickers and our hearts. Yes, he's just that good.

"There I met you and fell in love. You can't imagine what that was like after centuries of... emptiness. I hadn't thought I was capable of falling in love, but at last I felt like I had something to give..."

***
"I love you. You have no idea what you're worth to me." Again, his voice was low, but this time it vibrated with emotion.
                                                                   ***

"I want you to know that despite everything, I'm so glad I met you," I choked out. "It was the luckiest day of my life. If I hadn't, I never would have known what it was like for someone to love me, all of me, even the parts I hated. I would have gone through life empty and guilt-ridden, but you showed me a whole new world, Bones. I'll never be able to thank you for all you've done for me, but I will love you everyday until I die."

"Kitten," he moaned as he drew me down onto the bed. "I only thought I was living before I met you. You'll love me until you die? That's not nearly long enough.."

2) I think it is a well established fact that Jamie Fraser from Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series melts our hearts and makes us swoon with his sweet, sincere and beautiful words.

"I will find you," he whispered in my ear. "I promise. If I must endure two hundred years of purgatory, two hundred years without you — then that is my punishment, which I have earned for my crimes. For I have lied, and killed, and stolen; betrayed and broken trust. But there is the one thing that shall lie in the balance. When I shall stand before God, I shall have one thing to say, to weight against the rest."
His voice dropped, nearly to a whisper, and his arms tightened around me.
"Lord, ye gave me a rare woman, and God! I loved her well."

***

"You are my courage, as I am your conscience," he whispered. "You are my heart — and I your compassion. We are neither of us whole, alone. Do ye not know that, Sassenach?"

3) Ethan Sullivan. I don't think there are even words to describe how Ethan makes the Wenches feel. Weak knees - check, huge sighs - check, melting into a puddle of goo - check. Does anyone do it better than Ethan?

“You undo me, Merit. Wholly and completely. You don't take me at my word. You challenge me at every opportunity. And that means when I'm with you, I am less than the head of this House...and I am more than the head of this House. I am a man.” He stroked my cheeks with his thumbs. “In my very, very long life, I need you more than I have ever needed anything.”
***

"Always remember," he whispered to me, "that you are an uncommon soldier, whatever they say. And you are quite a thing to behold."

***
"You can run. You can keep running to the ends of the earth. But I won't be far behind you."
"Ethan—"
"No. I will never be far behind you." He tipped up my chin so sthat I could do nothing else but look back into his eyes. "Do the things you need to do. Learn to be a vampire, to be a warrior, to be the soldier you are capable of being. But consider the possibility that I made a mistake I regret--and that I'll continue to regret that mistake and try to convince you to give me another chance until the earth stops turning."
He leaned forward and pressed his lips to my forehead, my heart melting even as my more rational side harbored suspicions.
"No one said love was easy, Sentinel."

4) Terrible from Stacia Kane's amazing Downside Ghosts series. Terrible is so sweet it hurts. I would take his sincerity and simple, sweet speech over a sonnet any damn day. The things he says are painfully romantic, sexy as hell and said so earnestly you want to cry.

“I figure you really wanted me you'd say. Like now, maybe, if you dig. I'll fuckin carry you down your place on a run, you tell me aye, get you on your back afore the next word comes out your mouth. But you oughta have yourself certain, causen I ain't lookin for charity, an I ain't lettin you go after. Once...once ain't enough for me, dig?”

***

“Give you whatany you want, Chessiebomb. Anything.”

***

“Shit. You so fuckin pretty, Chessie. True thing. So … ain’t even can breathe sometimes.”

5) Barrons. Not traditionally someone you would see on a list of romance, but tradition doesn't know what it's missing. Barrons makes us sigh... hard.

Keep hoping to see the light in her eyes. Even knowing it'll mean she's saying good-bye.

***

"I’m the one who will always watch over you. Always be there to fuck you back to your senses when you need it, the one who will never let you die.”

***

“You’re Mac,” he says. “And I’m Jericho. And nothing else matters. Never will. You exist in a place that is beyond all rules for me. Do you understand that?”
I do.
Jericho Barrons just told me he loves me.

6) J.R.Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood has more than a few swoon-worthy quotes. It's hard to pick just a few. But here are some of my favorites.

"I was dead until you found me, though I breathed. I was sightless, though I could see. And then you came... and I was awakened." Zsadist & Bella

***

Rehvenge paused. And then he shocked the crap out of her by kneeling before her. As he looked up, he had a slight smile on his lips.
"Don't you get it Ehlena." With gentle hands, he stroked down her calf and brought her foot forward, balancing it on his thigh. As he undid the laces of her cheapo Keds sneaker, he whispered, "No matter what you wear... to me, you will always have diamonds on the soles of your shoes.”  Rhevenge & Ehlena

***

“One thing, though," Qhuinn murmured.
"What?"
The voice that came out his throat was unlike anything he'd ever heard from himself before. "If any guy breaks your heart or treats you like shit, I will bust him apart with my bare hands and leave his broken, bloody body for the sun."
Blay's laughter rumbled around the tiled walls. "Of course you will--"
"I'm dead fucking serious."
Blay's blue eyes shot over his shoulder.
"If there are any who dare to hurt you," Qhuinn growled in the Old Language, "I shall see them staked afore me and shall leave their bodies in ruin.”  Qhuinn & Blay

7) Eric Northman from the Southern Vampire Mysteries. Some people just don't realize that we love the Viking for more than his great looks, unrivaled sexual prowess and reputation as a fearless warrior. The way he makes Sookie feel loved with his beautiful words is just the cherry on top.

"Some night", he whispered "there's going to be nothing else but you and me."

***

"We could go back," he said. In the dome light of the car, his face looked hard as stone. "We could go back to your house. I can stay with you always. We can know each other's bodies in every way, night after night. I could love you." His nostrils flared, and he looked suddenly proud. "I could work. You would not be poor. I would help you."

"Sounds like a marriage," I said, trying to lighten the atmosphere. But my voice was too shaky.
"Yes," he said.
***

Before I could blink he was on his knees in front of me, pushing my legs apart, leaning in to kiss me. "I think you know how I feel," he said, in a whisper. "We are bonded. Can you believe I'm not thinking of you while I work? When my eyes open, I think of you, of every part of you." His fingers got busy and I gasped. This was direct, even for Eric. "Do you love me?" he asked, his eyes fixing mine.

8) Personally, a list of romance would just not be complete without some Austen. She is the woman who first introduced me to love and romance at a young age. Captain Wentworth, Mr. Darcy, Col. Brandon, they have been constants in my life making me sigh and swoon for all these years.

"I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you. Unjust I may have been, weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant. You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone, I think and plan. Have you not seen this? Can you fail to have understood my wishes?" (Letter to Anne from Wentworth, Persuasion.)
***
“In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” Darcy, Pride & Prejudice

***

"You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged; but one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever." Darcy, Pride & Prejudice

9) Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. Unconventional story, unconventional hero and heroine, but still a beautiful romance. Mr.Rochester and Jane were excruciatingly blunt with each other, but that didn't take away from the romance for the reader.

"I sometimes have a queer feeling with regard to you - especially when you are near me, as now: it is as if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly and inextricably knotted to a similar string situated in the corresponding quarter of your little frame. And if that boisterous channel, and two hundred miles or so of land some broad between us, I am afraid that cord of communion will be snapt; and then I've a nervous notion I should take to bleeding inwardly. As for you, - you'd forget me.”  Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre

***

“Every atom of your flesh is as dear to me as my own: in pain and sickness it would still be dear.” Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre

Honorary Mentions from various books :

“Can't you see? Every step I have taken, since I was that child on the bridge, has been to bring myself closer to you.”  Arthur Golden, Memoirs of a Geisha

***

“From the first time you laughed with me, all those months, and all those stories,” Joe said quietly. “They were all you, to me. All of them were you.” Megan Hart, Broken
***

“All hopes of eternity and all gain from the past he would have given to have her there, to be wrapped warm with him in one blanket, and sleep, only sleep. It seemed the sleep with the woman in his arms was the only necessity.” D.H.Lawrence, Lady Chatterley's Lover
***
“I cannot let you burn me up, nor can I resist you. No mere human can stand in a fire and not be consumed.” A.S.Byatt, Possession
***
“I've never had a moment's doubt. I love you. I believe in you completely. You are my dearest one. My reason for life.” Ian McEwan, Atonement

                 ***

“Do I love you? My God, if your love were a grain of sand, mine would be a universe of beaches.”  William Goldman, The Princess Bride

    1. Thanks Ange! I actually had a few more from BDB I liked, but these were my favorites. (I wanted to add "When I want you to beg I'll tell you" but I guess that isn't romantic per se :p )
