What the Wenches are Reading on Vacation

It’s that time of year where the Northern Hemisphere Wenches are on vacation. We call it on holiday, in the Southern Hemisphere. New Zealanders are trying to escape to Fiji or the Cook Islands for a mid-winter’s break from rain or snow. I’m the only Southern Hemisphere Wench, and my recent trip to Queensland, Australia, was a welcome break from the cold and the rain. Although those Australians were rugged up warm, while my son and I enjoyed the swimming pool.... That’s how you can tell a Kiwi tourist in Australia.

So let’s check after the jump to see which books the Wenches are packing in their suitcases or storing on their reading devices.

As I write this, I have only one more day of work, and then I’m taking almost 3 weeks off — and I cannot wait! I won’t be traveling much, but wherever I go, I’ll most likely take Jamie and Claire with me. I’m still reading The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon...yeah, I know I’ve said that for weeks, but like I’ve also said before...these books are huge! And my spare time for reading hasn’t been all that much lately. So, Jamie and Claire it is. But having said that, I will be taking them on my e-reader, so I’ll have other options. And let’s not forget, Biting Bad by Chloe Neill is releasing on August 6, and I will most definitely be reading that little diamond on my vacation, thank you very much.

Let’s all meet in the tropics.

Wench Merit

My vacation starts August 6. I hope to have some reading time on this short vacation. But if not, at least I’ll have a lot of time to read at the end of my vacation, while I’m flying home from San Francisco for 15 hours! I’ll be reading Chloe Neill’s Biting Bad! Can’t wait!!!

Wench Donna

When I went to the airport to fly home from vacation, I picked up Delusion in Death by J.D. Robb. I hadn’t read any of those books in ages, and I know I missed a bunch in between — but it was easy to pick up and get right back into. All my old faves are back, and murder and mayhem ensue. As usual.

Wench Zee

I have been so busy most of the summer, I haven’t gotten much reading done. Between that and preparing to travel next week, the most I’ve done is reread a lot of Neil Gaiman. Waiting for Biting Bad.

So fellow Wench Angela asked what do we read when on Summer Vacation or a Holiday, and I’m rather stumped as to what to write for her. When I get a “vacation”, I’m rather busy spending time with family that live out of state, so reading time is extremely limited. Also, I need the house to be quiet of all noise except white noise. If someone were to drag me to a beach, totally funny since I’m so pale I’d burst into flames, I would be so distracted by people watching that I’d never get anything read. I also have to travel by plane, and I do try to bring a book with me, but I’m that person most people don’t like to sit next to because I talk. On my last trip, I did manage to get a lot of writing done, but not reading. I suffer from Shinny Object Syndrome and a bad case of Oh I know they are not talking about me but I cannot help but listen! But if the vacation or holiday happens to be one where I don’t leave the house...I’ll check off whatever is next on my To Be Read (TBR) list. If I want a book that I don’t mind being interrupted while reading, I’m going with the Twilight series. I have read it so many times, I’m rather shocked I can’t recite it. It is one I enjoy, to the dismay of other Wenches, every time I read it. Go Team Alice and Jasper!!!

Wench Anne

I was actually on vacation last week! It was glorious, even if it was just a visit to my in-laws’ house. Anyway, I’ve been spending my summer with Ty & Zane and the rest of the Cut & Run characters. I just can’t seem to pull myself away from them. But usually on vacations, I tend to read a lot of one-off books, not series. I often use vacations to catch up on my favorite crime-thriller authors, like James Patterson, John Grisham, David Baldacci, etc. But this summer, I just can’t let Ty, Zane, and the rest of Team Sidewinder go.

Wench Veronica

I recently got motivated to put the Collection function on my Kindle to good use and organized everything I had stored on my Kindle. Now I’m like a kid in a candy store, because I can see at a glance what I’ve read and what I haven’t read! My largest "unread" categories are Fanfiction and M/M (imagine that). So when I’m in vacation mode, I’ll be checking off stories on my Fanfic TBR list.

Wench Kathi

I read Dan Brown’s Inferno a couple of months ago during a short vacation. I’m on vacation now visiting my in-laws, who live on a lake surrounded by gorgeous mountains, so we stay pretty busy with outdoor activities and visiting. I thought I’d get back to the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones, which I sorta started and then shamelessly abandoned for an Outlander quickie reread due to all the Jamie-casting excitement on the interwebs. I brought audio and e-reader versions of the Charley books. I also brought an old-fashioned hardback version of Michael Pollan’s Cooking, which I started reading during our 12-hour car trip, and so far has kept me too interested to switch. I think I’ll be listening to one series during activities and reading the hardback late at night on the couch.

Wench Angela

When I’m on vacation, I always take way more books than I’ve ever going to read. I usually pack in A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. I’ve read it so many times, it’s an easy book for me to pick up and put down again. Which is an important consideration because I have kids. During my recent holiday in Australia, I was still absorbed in the Kim Harrison series The Hollows (which I am still reading), but there was hardly any time to read while catching up with family.

Some Wenches were too busy reading and relaxing, too busy visiting, or too far off the grid to send us an update, so I’ll summarize what they’re up to.

Wench Barb

Teasing fellow Wenches with the knowledge she got an early copy of Biting Bad. So many of the Wenches are waiting impatiently for the book to come out. Lucky woman!

Wench Katherine

Sunning herself in California, so unable to read anything as she is relaxing by the beach with her favourite tipple. No doubt sangria.

Wench Amanda

Going to keep reading A Song of Ice and Fire!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wench Vale

Keeping us updated on all the latest book releases and little snippets she finds for us to use. I think we keep her too busy doing this valuable work for her to have much reading time.

We hope you have a great summer, and that you manage to get through a couple of books off your TBR list!

Do you have a favourite book that you pack when you are going away on vacation? Or a genre or style of book you prefer? What you are planning to read this summer?

  1. I am anxiously awaiting Biting Bad as are so many others. I am also a part of a book club that tries to read a different genre each month. So last month I read World War Z and I just finished The Joy Luck Club for this month. Both excellent by the way. The book that I always take with me to reread if I don't have anything new is "The Deed of Paksenarrion" by Elizabeth Moon.

    1. Devon, Biting Bad is so popular amongst most of the Wenches. Keep an eye out for the blog tour for CLV :-). I really enjoyed Joy Luck Club too. Excellent book. World War Z is about zombies. Right?

I've just added Elizabeth Moon to my TBR. It looks like something I would read. Thanks for the recommendation.

    2. Your welcome. World War Z is about zombies, but it was a new take that I hadn't seen or read before. It really made me feel like I was reading survivor stories from a real war. Very interesting.

As for Elizabeth Moon, I have literally read "The Deed of Paksenarrion" at least 15 times. If you liked "The Hobbit" or "Lord of the Rings" I strongly recommend it.

  2. For my holidays, I packed "Outlander" books 6 and 7 (to reread once more..), "The knife Man" by Wendy Moor, "Ordinary World" by Elisa Lorello and "the time travel guide to Elizabethan England" by Ian Mortimer AND Outlander book ONE. I love good detective novels too (Peter James'Roy Grace series). Christiane (from Europe).

    1. Wow I love your choices of books Christiane. The only one I recognise is Outlander though. I just checked out your other books and they look so interesting. I'm terrible in that I tend to stick to a couple of genres. I need to branch out more!!!!

    2. Hello Angela, thanks for yr answer. Do try Elisa Lorello's books, the prequel of "Ordinary World" is "FAKING IT" and I'm sure you'll love it. ! Other title : "Adulation" by Elisa, her next book "SHE HAS YOUR EYES" will be released Feb.2014. My BTR list is getting very long. Have you ever read Karen Maitland'books ?(Medieval England), I just read "The Gallows Curse" and loved it ! Check her out if you wish. Have a nice summer ! Christiane

  3. Thanks Christiane. LOL it's winter where I live :-). But I did manage to get a warm break in Australia for 10 days. Otherwise the rain would get me down. I've just added Karen Maitland on my TBR. I love Sharon Penman HERE BE DRAGONS amongst others, but hadn't heard of Karen. I'll give it a try. Thank you for the Elisa Lorello's title too. It sounds great at well. I hope you will be getting a holiday!!!
