What the Wenches Are Reading

The Wenches have been busy with a lot of things this week, but we still managed to get some reading done! You’ll see lots of familiar titles on our reading lists today. Westeros is keeping some busy, others are currently busy in Chicago with our favorite vamps, or rereading a favorite series. A few of us have discovered some brand new reads, thanks to great recommendations or movies based on the books.

Click through to see what has been occupying us this week! And don’t forget to share what you’ve been reading!

Amanda: After last week’s uncertainty about what to read next, I decided to go back to A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin. An amazing thing happened, too! I started back on the somewhat boring chapter where I had left off, and oh, three pages later, somebody got killed out of freaking nowhere!!! GRRM, you knock my socks off!

Anne: I am continuing my Night Huntress reread, I’m inching ever closer to meeting Vlad for the first time. I’ve also read a couple Supernatural fanfics this week. I was going to start listening to the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone audiobook on my commute, but iTunes and I could not agree on the chapter order. So, once I beat iTunes into submission, I will start that.

Angela: I’m about halfway through The Black Prism by Brent Weeks and enjoying it. A lot. Really compelling plot twist in the book that keeps me wanting to read more, to see how it is all going to work out.

Barbara: I haven’t had a lot of time to read recently, so I’m slowly rereading Biting Bad. As much as I have enjoyed my jam-packed August, I’m looking forward to September slowing down and giving me time to read. And clean my house. And visit with my local friends. I’m planning to start reading Wench Shau’s recommendation soon.

Care: This week sees me finishing up Cut & Run by Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux. Still a fabulous book, I’m hoping to get back to my regular reading schedule shortly. (I’ve been reading The ADD/ADHD Checklist: A Practical Reference for Parents and Teachers during the days, trying to figure out my life!)

Donna: I’ve been on holidays and haven’t done a whole lot of reading (for me, that is ― LOL). I watched the critically acclaimed film What Maisie Knew, and decided I wanted to read the original story. The film was adapted from the novel of the same name by Henry James. It’s the story of two dysfunctional, self-absorbed people who had a child together, divorced, and used the little girl to intensify their hatred of each other. Maisie’s awareness of the irresponsible behavior of most of the adults in her life grows as she becomes older. It is interesting to follow her growing understanding of the situation as she matures. This is an important story, and sadly remains relevant in today’s society.

Kathi: I’m reading The Kingmaker’s Daughter, book 4 in Phillipa Gregory’s Cousins’ War series about the War of the Roses. This book features Anne Neville’s POV. Her father’s military strategy put three kings on the throne. (Why three? Because they kept growing a brain of their own. He wanted someone who would let him make all the decisions.) Like the other heroines of this series, she is born into the position of political pawn (i.e., daughter of parents with wealth, good bloodlines, and ambitious political aspirations), but refuses to sit idly by and insists on helping steer her own destiny. She became Richard III’s Queen of England. This story forms part of The White Queen tv series.

Merit: This week, I had quite a surprise in the form of a book. I didn’t expect it at all! I was going through book recommendations, and thought that this one might be an “in-between” book, a lightweight read, to pass the time until I got back to reading books on my TBR list. Alas, this story keeps playing in my mind. I was hooked from the second page; it left me with a lot of ???s. Yes, I feel like a question mark, not really sure about my feelings for this story. I thought I was reading a contemporary romance/light erotica (okay there is that, yes!), but the suspense in the story was heavy, and there was a lot of mystery all around. I could not decide which of the characters was more suspicious; they all seemed to be.... I had more questions than answers, and it ended with a cliffhanger. Escaping Reality was the name of this book, first in a trilogy called The Secret Life of Amy Benson by Lisa Renee Jones.

Natalie: I’m such a bad Wench. Last year I read 101 books, but I was home sick on medical leave the majority of the time. Now I’m back into the swing of life. I have a job that is Mon–Fri, seeing friends in free time, and so what that equals is me not reading. I wish I could be more interesting this summer, as last summer I could have given you names of tons of books I read. I am sure it will kick in again, at least I hope so.

Zee: I was lucky enough to read an early copy of Megan Hart’s Tear You Apart this week. But other than that, have been busy this past weekend with the ONE thing I would prefer to reading: hanging out with Head Wench Barb and Wench Amanda!! You can’t beat that.

  1. You have some great reads here! Just what I was after! I just finished Deni Hickey's Breaking Free, it was my first "travel" read and I loved it. He has a follow up called The Traveler out soon so I need a book in between, so thanks for putting up what you are reading. Hickey's story is great and I recommend it, his info http://www.breakingfree-thebooks.com/. Love your name by the way!
