What the Wenches are Reading

Betty White – Source

We're missing a few Wenches this week, but the rest of us are making up for it by finishing up beloved series, getting hooked on new series, continuing with books that have us rapt, and using our precious reading time to learn a few things!

Click through to find out what has captured our imaginations this week, and be sure to share your reading selections below!

Amanda:  I am almost finished with A Clash of Kings! You didn't get me this time, GRRM! I knew that was a total fake-out...but with 200 pages left, I'll admit that I'm scared because you haven't made me scream out in shock since about 50%.

Anne: Well, I'm nearly done with my Night Huntress reread. I am currently reading Twice Tempted. Man, do I love Vlad. So, so much. I'm not really sure what I'm going to read next. I'm open to suggestions!

Barbara: I read the book Vale made me read, Red-Headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells, the first book in the Sabina Kane series. And I loved it. I'll be writing more about it in the coming weeks, but I'm excited about a unique urban fantasy series, with excellent twists and plenty of plot set up for coming books. I'll be reading on, and I predict that I'll be devouring them. I didn't have book two right away, leaving me unable to immediately read on, so I read Tempted by Megan Hart. In one day! I haven't done that in a while, so I'm doubly thankful for a lazy Sunday, and a wonderful book!

Care: You know, learning to be a Hockey Mom this week really threw me for a loop. Instead of my usual three or more books I'm working on, I've got only one this week... though I'm debating picking up anything that will help me figure out how this Hockey Mom gig works! Anyway, in the meantime, I'm reading The Curiosity of School: Education and the Dark Side of Enlightenment by Zander Sherman. It's actually a rather interesting read, about how the public school system came to be, and why it exists a) in it's present form and b) at all.

Donna: With all the excitement this week from the Outlander TV series casting, I started Outlander (again). This time, however, I'm listening to the audiobook, narrated by Davina Porter.

Kathi: Decided to follow up Phillipa Gregory's Cousins' War series with a book she put together of biographical essays about three of the women. In historical series, I'm always interested in which events and scenes are "real", which are speculation, and what the author knew that caused her to write speculative scenes the way she did. The Women of the Cousins' War answers some of those questions.

Merit: Every once in a while, along comes a book that has a new take on the paranormal genre. God Save the Queen by Kate Locke is one of them. This first book in the Immortal Empire series combines elements of paranormal, urban fantasy, steampunk, and historical romance. It is set in an alternate present where Queen Victoria still rules with an immortal fist, while the great plague changed humans into vampires, werewolves, and goblins. I like the idea of a kick-ass heroine in a ball gown. Thank you, DeAnna Schultz, for pointing me (again) towards a fun and exciting, different kind of read.

Zee: I finished the Secret McQueen series, and had a whole lot of mixed feelings about it. I am impatiently waiting to get my hands on the sixth book, though. I also finally got around to MacRieve, the 13th novel in the Immortals After Dark series (which Wench Shau discussed here). The last few IAD novels have kinda lost their mojo, and I don't know if I'll be tuning in for the next few (unless we get one about Nix or Fury). Now, I'm torn between the Sabina Kane series, or yet another Megan Hart novel.

  1. Hey, I am reading(listening?)to the Outlander audiobook as well - I am trying to walk more, and I find it has helped me walk farther to listen to a good book when my walking buddy can't go with me. I am hoping to learn all the correct ways to pronounce things!

  2. Almost finished City of Lost Souls (Cassandra Clare). Don't know why these have to be classed as 'Young Adult', they are just as gripping for 'older Adults'! Have picked up some great suggestions for different series to try from other Wenches. Thank you for sharing.

  3. I'm happy you really liked it, Merit. :) The second book is as awesome as the first one. You're welcome.
